What Is Personal Watercraft Insurance Coverage?

Watercraft insurance is an umbrella term that covers boats, yachts, and motorized watercraft under 16 feet in length (also known as personal watercraft). Protecting watercraft powered by a motor that has a horsepower of at least 25 miles per hour, a personal watercraft insurance policy is designed to protect you and your prized possession should things on the water get choppy.

What Does Personal Watercraft Insurance Cover?

Whether it’s insurance for yachts, jet ski insurance, boat towing insurance, or boat collision insurance, a personal watercraft insurance policy covers the following:

  • Damage to another craft or dock
  • Bodily injury or death to another person due to your negligence
  • The negligence of another driver while using your personal watercraft (PWC)
  • Towed water skiers or wakeboarders who become injured using your craft
  • Physical damage to the hull, machinery, and equipment
  • Injury to you caused by an uninsured watercraft operator
  • Towing assistance if you break down on the water

What Does Personal Watercraft Insurance Not Cover?

Typically, the following examples are not covered in boat insurance coverage:

  • A craft that has been modified to increase speed and enhance performance
  • Operation of a personal watercraft after dark-dusk to dawn

Do I Need Personal Watercraft Insurance?

Though not required in most states, a boat is often a purchase that comes after years of hard work and saving money. With this in mind, most owners opt for some sort of boat insurance policy to ensure they’re protecting their investment no matter what. While not required by PA law, personal watercraft insurance is often required by marinas and boat loan providers.
